Apennine Colossus (Italian: Colosso dell’Appennino)

Location: 

Vaglia, Tuscany, Italy, within the estate of the Villa Demidoff

Sculptor: 

Created by the renowned Flemish sculptor Giambologna (Jean de Boulogne) in the late 1580s.

Height: 

Approximately 11 meters (36 feet) tall12.

Symbolism: 

The colossal figure personifies the Apennine Mountains, which stretch across central Italy.

Appearance:

The colossus depicts an elderly man crouched at the shore of a lake.

His skin is smooth, but his beard and hair resemble plants and rock formations, blending with the surrounding nature.

The giant’s left hand appears to squeeze the head of a sea monster, from whose open mouth water flows into a pond ahead of the statue.

Hidden Marvels:

Beneath the colossus lie a series of chambers and caves on three levels.

The ground floor contains a cave housing an octagonal fountain dedicated to the Greek goddess Thetys.

Italian painter Jacopo Ligozzi adorned the Grotto de Thetys with frescoes depicting villages from the Mediterranean coast of Tuscany in 15861.
